A Commitment to Education and Our Children
The Greater Huntington area school districts are committed to providing outstanding education for students, excellent places to work, and a quality of life you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.We are extremely proud of our school systems and the place we are happy to call home. We want to welcome you and hope you will consider our region as a place for you and your family to live, learn, and grow.
These county school systems and private schools have an abiding commitment to provide quality education programs and innovative learning opportunities for all pre-K through adult students, using national standards and best teaching practices for establishing clear and measurable goals.
Content standards, objectives and performance descriptors combine to give teachers a powerful resource for planning instruction. The sequencing of the grade level objectives and the levels of performance descriptors acknowledge that students acquire skills and knowledge in increments and at different rates. The focus of the state standards remains achieving a high level by offering all students rigorous and challenging learning opportunities, including:
• Accountability system focused on student achievement
• Continuous improvement planning
• County excess levies
• High per pupil expenditure
• Prominent parental/community involvement
• Safe school plans
• School building programs
• School business partners
• Service learning opportunities
• State-of-the-art technology infrastructure
• Work-based programs

Cabell County Building New Schools for the 21st Century
In January of 2006, Cabell County voters approved the $60,455,000 bond levy in a special election conducted by the school system. It was the largest single school bond issue in state history. Design committees were immediately formed at each of the five project sites and a new web site for construction updates was established, www.greatcabellschools.com. Cabell also received notice from the SBA that the agency was granting $2 million in additional funds for construction of one elementary school, a replacement for Martha Elementary School. Since then, the SBA has committed an additional $1.5 million to the Martha project. Ground was broken on that school Wednesday, March 15, 2007 with a public celebration attended by multiple state, county, and local dignitaries and economic development representatives. While construction on the Martha project is well underway, plans are being completed for the remaining four facilities, Huntington Middle School (to replace West and Cammack middle schools), Southside Elementary (to replace Miller and Cammack elementary schools), Milton Middle School (to replace Milton Middle School), and Barboursville Middle School (to replace Barboursville Middle School). Construction on these remaining projects will begin in the near future, and with that construction, the investment taxpayers have made in the future of Cabell County Schools will be realized.
